Pocahontas is a rural city in northeastern Arkansas. It is located about 100 miles north of Memphis, Tennessee and about 150 miles north of Little Rock, Arkansas. Pocahontas is positioned in Randolph County and serves as the county seat. It is the largest town in Randolph County. In 2016, the United States Census Bureau reported 6,400 people lived in Pocahontas.

Before European-American settlers moved into the area of modern-day Pocahontas, the area was occupied by Native American Indians. The Osage used the land as hunting grounds. In 1770, members of the Tonti Expedition established a trading post. The trading post would later become Port of Pocahontas. European-Americans began arriving in the area in the early 1800s following the Louisiana Purchase. By 1827, the first U.S. citizens had established themselves in what is now Pocahontas.
