Peoples of the Choctaw and Quapaw Indian tribes were the original inhabitants of the area Newport is located in. The area was attractive to these individuals because of the well-known rich, fertile soil, ideal for growing cotton, and the available timber. Following the removal of the Indians, a community was developed in the area of modern-day Newport. The community would develop as Newport. In 1875, Newport became incorporated. It was not until 1892 that the city was designated to serve as the county seat of Jackson County.
